Encounters in Excellence

This program provided “live-narrated” school presentations of its documentary “August in Africa.” The purpose of this program is to increase the student’s knowledge of Africa; to show how ecotourism can work to save endangered species and to increase knowledge about ecosystems and their functions. Students and teachers were invited to adopt-an-elephant or adopt-a-gorilla on-line. The presentation included supplemental information and culminating activities for students.

Cultural Arts Society Ballet

Each year, the Cultural Arts Society’s Junior Ballet Company presents a free, fully-costumed dance spectacular at the Jackie Gleason Theatre of the Performing Arts on Miami Beach. Students have the opportunity to see their peers perform ballet, jazz and modern dance selections.

THE EXECUTIVE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

Principals are matched with key business executives for a mutually beneficial one-to-
one partnership through the district’s DADE PARTNERS PROGRAM. The purpose is
to develop an on-going relationship whereby both parties share their expertise to
benefit the educational environment for public school students.

Florida Marlins “Cornerstone for Kids” Programs

The foundation of every child’s future is a strong mind and a strong body. Through education, the arts and baseball, Cornerstones for Kids provides the tools for Florida’s youth to develop both their minds and bodies.

Cornerstones for Kids enables the Marlins reach beyond the walls of Pro Player Stadium to meet face-to-face with our fans. Baseball is a family game, and we are committed to making sure that the Marlins organization impacts every member of our diverse South Florida family in a positive manner.

Florida Marlins "Marlins@School"

Marlins@School is an on-line instrument that uses the exictement and relvance of baseball as a way to help you teach ot the required Standards. The unit highlights Florida Marlins players such as Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre, Mike Lowell and AJ Burnett adn uses them in examples to teach the strands of Number Sense. Force, Force & Motion, Reading and Motion - to name a few. New to this year's program is a chapter on Manager of the Year Jack McKeon.

Major League Baseball “Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life” Program

Launched in 1997-98, this program is a multi-curricular character education program designed to teach children ages 9 –14 the values and traits they need to deal with the barriers, obstacles and challenges in their lives. Developed by Jackie’s daugher, Sharon Robinson,Director of Educational Programs for Major League Baseball, the program is underwritten through the generosity of the Major League Player’s Trust for Children and Scholastic, Inc.

SALVATION ARMY “12 MONTHS OF GIVING”

The Salvation Army sponsors the “12 Month of Giving” for all schools. The program is designed to insure a consistent flow of food for the needy year-round, and to foster greater awareness of the problem. Schools sign up for the month of their choice and students initiate a canned food drive in their school community.
