Doral’s Dade Partners were intrigued by the title of
this year’s Red Ribbon Campaign – “Plant
A Seed to Be Drug Free”. Together they formed a team
to raise the community’s awareness regarding drug prevention
and create an attendance behavior modification program. Through
their homeroom class, every student wrote a promise that was
included on a class poster. As student’s read their
pledges they planted a plant in the school’s garden.
The four Dade Partners, Citibank, Team-Metro, United Transport
International (UTI) and the West Dade Federation of Homeowner
Associations, raised funds for to contract a landscaping company
for the garden and has supported the program year-round.
Citibank followed their commitment of the Red Ribbon Campaign,
with a $200.00 grant from Citigroup Foundation. This grant
is directly tied to an attendance program, and the beautification
project through the agriscience classes. Team-Metro has teamed
up with the Trust Counselor to mentor those students with
poor attendance and supports the Saturday School Program.
UTI has a weekly editorial in the local newspapers that addresses
drug awareness and peer pressure. West Dade Federation of
Homeowner Associations under the direction of its President,
(Mr. Morgan Levy), offers free “Junior Membership”
to students encouraging them to become involved in their community.
All four Dade Partners come from different business backgrounds,
have different interests; yet one common goal — to enhance
the educational program at Doral Middle.
