Duhaney Pontiac/Buick/GMC

Nominated by Barbara Goleman Senior High School

Addressing lagging student attendance at Barbara Goleman Senior High School was the main objective of the partnership with Duhaney Pontiac/Buick/GMC. During the 1998 school year, Goleman ranked near the bottom of all senior high schools in Miami-Dade County. Trevor Duhaney, President and CEO, responded by giving the school a quality late model car as an incentive to get students to come to school. The vast majority of high school students are interested in the acquisition of an automobile. Students are eligible for the June drawing by achieving near-perfect to perfect attendance for that school year. The reaction of the student body was remarkable— shooting them into the top ten in overall student attendance the first year of the partnership. Many members of the school staff believe that, due to the overall improvement in attendance patterns, the students achieved better comprehension. This improvement is easily traced by a full letter grade rise on FCAT scores from a D to a C.
