Hadassah of Greater Miami
Nominated by Sylvania Heights Elementary School
The Hadassah Reading Partners “Read Write
Now!” Tutoring Program focuses its interests and energies
in providing one-to-one instruction in reading in an informal
but yet effective setting. A total of 27 tutors were paired
with students who were identified as needing remediation in
the area of reading. Tutors work individually with the students
twice a week for 35-minute sessions, and keep detailed records
of each child’s progress. The tutors utilize materials
provided by the classroom teachers and the school. In addition,
once a month, a member of the Miami Heat or Miami Sol visits
the students and provides story sessions for reading motivation.
Research shows a connection between literacy and violence prevention.
Approximately 80 percent of juvenile offenders are illiterate,
and 85 percent of those in prison are high school dropouts.
At Sylvania Heights, 74 percent of the students have increased
their academic point average in reading comprehension as well
as improved their self-esteem. Additionally, students demonstrated
more interest in reading and checked out more library books
than the previous year.
