Washington Mutual Bank
Nominated by Lake Stevens Middle School

Washington Mutual Bank established a banking program in the school to enable students to open savings accounts, and learn “hands on” about saving and the banking profession. Each Friday morning, bank representatives work with parent volunteers and students to “run” the bank.

Washington Mutual’s partnership is unique because bank representatives serve as adjunct faculty members. For example, employees provide tutorial services for students in algebra. Employees also provide opportunities for students to explore a variety of careers by involving them in job shadowing. The branch manager, Ms. Teresa Edgecombe, and her staff have developed a very positive rapport with the students, parents and staff at Lake Stevens Middle School.
