Middle School
Enrichment's partnership program with South Florida Inner-City
Games has made Miami-Dade County Public Schools the 2003
Florida winner of The Civic Star Award, awarded by the American
Association of School Administrators and Sohexho School
Service.
The award honors
school-community partnerships that enrich the education
process. This award-winning program was housed at 12 schools
during the 2003-04 school year. Students received homework
assistance, academic tutoring and/or enrichment, fine arts
instruction, recreation, and life skills education.
In the summer
of 2003, the South Florida Inner-City Games became the South
Florida After School All Stars. Summer camps for students
at the 12 schools were held during the days that summer
school was in session. Summer camp students enjoyed computer-aided
language arts and mathematics enrichment events on Fridays,
including one field trip.
The program will
continue during the 2003-04 school year at the same schools,
and will expand to at least one additional site. Expanded
curriculum will include additional computer aided tutorial
programs, a reading club, a family outreach component and
morning early bird classes.
